WHAT IS THAI GACP?

Thai GACP is a quality standard necessary to qualify your cannabis crop suitable for medical sector. GACP is the acronym of Good Agriculture and Collection Practice, and its is comparable to GMP for processed product.

GACP Thailand dictates the guidelines to follow during Cannabis (and other kind of medical plants) cultivation, with the simple goals of protecting patients and ensuring that product quality is not compromised through the imposition of standardized practices and procedures in cultivation processes.

WHY USING GACP STANDARDS?

The new Cannabis & Hemp Act, B.A. 2567 shall confirm that Cannabis is a medical herb under the jurisdiction of Thai FDA as it has been since 2019, when Thailand approved the use of Cannabis for medical purposes.

Thai FDA classified Cannabis as a specially controlled herb, hence the control falls under the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM). Traditional and Alternative Medicine Standards an Practices in Thailand are equivalent to those of modern medicine, therefore Cannabis and derivatives from its process are medicilnal products. Only products containing low quantities of active principles are out of this classification (food/cosmetics).

MEDICAL CANNABIS STANDARDS

According to the definition of  the Cannabis & Hemp Act, 2066 Cannabis is a specially controlled herb used for Traditional Medicine purposes. Being classified as “medical” ingredient, Cannabis becomes subject to standards required for drug ingredients. In case of natural products (herbs) the main standards are GACP for cultivation and GMP for process.

Therefore, all entrepreneurs growing Cannabis for medical purpose are, according to Cannabis & Hemp Act 2024, subject to GACP certification.

GACP THAILAND FOR CANNABIS DISPENSARIES

Is GACP necessary for the “commercial” recreational sale in Dispensaries? Yes, it is, as regulated by the current laws.

Cannabis flowers, being above the limit of allowed active principle (THC) are medical products. Being their prescription necessary or not (it will be soon, after the new Act full enforcement), and being product traceability already a rule, every flower used for human consumpion (smoked or ingested) will need to be growed under safety standards. These standards are dictated by GACP guidelines, and a GACP certification is needed to sell legally on the market.
